The Utah Attorney Generals Office has been actively working to reduce youth smoking since the landmark 1998 settlement agreement negotiated in a nationw ide lawsuit filed against the United States tobacco industry, noted Shurtleff. Assistant attorneygGeneral Joel Ferre has been negotiating agreements with business industry giants like BP Amoco, Walgreens and ExxonMobil to adopt sales practices that prevent teen smoking. Im hbping the movie makers will use their influence to let young people know that smoking isnt cool, but that smoking kills, pointed out Ferre. While the overall smoking levels in the United States have declined in recent years, teenagers are continuing to experiment with the use of tobacco products at an unacceptable rate, emphasized the Utah Attorney Generals Office. sisters.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has actively joined a nationwide campaign lobbying Hollywood to kick the movie industrys nicotine habit. Shurtleff and 24 other attorneys general recently sent a letter to Motion Picture Association of America president Jack Valenti that urges film makers to reduce smoking in the movies. Right now, the most deadly stunt in a movie is smoking. We are asking the motion picture industry to clear the smoke from the silver screen and help prevent young people from picking up this dangerous habit, commented Shurtleff. A recent Dartmouth University study found that reducing cigarette smoking in movies could significantly decrease the initiation of tobacco use in youth, pointed out the Utah attorney general.

The results of the Dartmouth research study indicated that children between the age of 10 and 14 years old who watched the greatest amount of smoking in motion pictures were nearly three times more likely to start smoking than youth who viewed the least amount of smoking in movies. The data suggests that eliminating smoking in movies could reduce the number of young people starting smoking by half, explained Friday Night Special Chicken $25 Fried Chicken iJtDraltsalldatfeverydayl Thank you tor supporting BUNDERSON Monument Cemeterv Lettering Etching Quality Memorials Home appointments available 530 Main, Castle Dale 3KI-M92 Cold Boor Pool Tables Antiques www.balancerock.com 10 30 am -8pm, Fn Sat 8 30 am- 10pm, Sunday 8 30 am-8 00 pm 148 S.
